Benefits of Camel Pose

There are so many different yoga poses and variations out there.  Each one offers its own amazing benefits to its students.  Today let’s touch on the benefits of practicing Camel.

  • Opening of the hip flexors, allowing for a deep stretch
  • Deep opening in the chest, a great heart opener
  • Stretches the shoulders and back
  • Aids in improving posture
  • Aids in the relief of lower back pain
  • Releases the vertebrae allowing for spinal flexibility
  • Strengthens the back

This pose can be quite difficult to do properly however, there are many variations.  Starting with a variation and finding proper alignment in the pose is key to reaping the benefits.


Be sure you are pressing your hips forward and lifting your chest.  Do not allow your head to just fall back but, gently support it.  Hands resting on your lower back is a variation that can aid in the support of your lower back.

Remember to always take a moment and check in with your body.  There is a difference between pain and discomfort and, a pose should not be restricting your breath.  If you are in pain or having trouble breathing, back off just a bit.  If you feel you can go further, then try taking your hands to your heels.

img_1340Just remember this pose is a huge heart opener and can sometimes be cause for drumming up feelings.  Let them come, acknowledge them and thank your body.  To come out of the pose, if your head is back, lead with your heart.  Lift it up and out, coming into a child’s pose after is a great counter pose.

  1. I’ve got a story for you , today I went to my first yoga class. But it was daunting . The studio closest to my home the walls are pink and they’re selling sports bras and tights in the studio it felt like ‘ a woman’s space’ . So I thought any woman’s initial assumption to me walking in would be that I’m some sort of pervert . So I bought a T shirt with a Buddha on it and a prayer beads bracelet. I walked in masquerading like I was some sort of yogi hipster .
